Around the Council
Special Meeting Report:
On Sunday evening last February 18, a smaller assembly of Brother Knights than anticipated partly due to the weather gathered in the main hall of the Council. They were there to hear the Grand Knight discuss the future of the Council. Among the topics discuss were what we have done successfully in the last few months, what we need to do in the coming months and what we should consider to do in the future. Increasing taxes from a new assessment on our building has raised the question of establishing a Catholic War Veterans Post. By legally transfer the ownership of the Council to a Catholic War Veterans Post to avoid paying property taxes currently at 45K and are projected to increase to 51K. The GK Tom Kelly has formed a committee (DGK, Ken Lyons; PGK Dan Lynch; PGK Steve Driscoll and Rob Rom) to look at the feasibility of becoming a CWV.
After his opening statement the Grand Knight open up the floor for comments. Some were skeptical about transferring ownership; others wanted to know more about the CWV. Still others wanted to know what the real value of the building was worth, and there were some who were just against the idea of selling the building to the CWV. In an unofficial straw vote a majority of Brother Knights looked favorably on the proposal. It was agreed on by all the members attending that another meeting will be held with PGK of Hartigan ( he was the first to set up a CWV Post in his council); a CWV representative; and the lawyers who work on the deal. This meeting will be announced at a future date.
Valentine Dance:
Our Council held the first of many Valentine Dances to come on Friday, February 8. Although the attendance was lower than expected. My Brother Knights and their guests were entertained to a most enjoyable dinner, a lively band and a good time by all. The Council also came away with a small profit due to the hard work by Gk Tom Kelly, DGK Ken Lyons and the Chancellor Greg Peppard. Special thanks to Bob Morrison for donating Estee Lauder gifts.

Saint Patrick’s Day Parade:
Mark your calendars, the first Sunday down in March (4th) is the St. Patrick’s Parade. The Council will hold our traditional breakfast at 10:30 AM before we assemble to march in the parade. After the parade all are invited to come back to the Council where we will serve Corn-Beef sandwiches and salads at a nominal charge of $ 5.00 per person.
Saint Patrick’s Dance:
The Council will hold our annual St. Patrick’s Dance on Saturday, March 10 at 8PM. The cost is $ 50 per person for a family style dinner of traditional corn-beef, potatoes, cabbage and Irish Soda Bread. I was told that chicken dinner would be available for those who do not care for the traditional Irish dinner. Pete McMonagle and Mike Keough will supply the music along with bagpipers. This year’s honoree as the “Irish Couple of the Year is Tom and Vilma Doherty. For additional details please contact John O’Shea at 746-5671 or Bobby McCabe
Going home at Last:
It began Monday night, stretch into Tuesday morning, and continued into Wednesday afternoon. The clock was too indistinct for Seamus parents Pam and Danny to make out in the dim glow off the hallway light. Young Seamus struggle to sleep, somebody had put those darn restraints on him again. Thursday, the big day had arrived; the entire McWeeney clan was going home. Yes he had missed his first big snowfall, but there would be many more to come. He probably will not remember much about the surgery, his third since turning “one”.
Here’s hoping, for a brave little boy who has been waiting patiently long enough. To his parents, Pam and Danny I leave you this little poem:
Seamus is your sunshine, moonbeams and much more.
Brightening up your world as never before.
